Welcome to the NYU Shanghai-ECNU Center on Global History, Economy, and Culture

Established in 2017 through a collaboration between NYU Shanghai and East China Normal University, the NYU Shanghai-ECNU Center on Global History, Economy, and Culture explores the developments and changes in the international strategic framework of China’s peaceful rise and the shift of world orders.

Under the leadership of Chen Jian, Distinguished Global Network Professor of History at NYU and NYU Shanghai and Hu Shih Professor of History Emeritus at Cornell University, and Shen Zhihua, Senior Professor of History and Director of the Center for Cold War International History Studies at ECNU, the Center leverages its extensive collection of primary sources and archival materials to conduct cutting-edge research and promote high-level scholarly exchange and cooperation.

Each academic year, the Center hosts or co-hosts over a dozen lectures, roundtables, seminars, and workshops, providing valuable context to current affairs at home and abroad. Our research covers a wide range of topics, such as the history of the Cold War, 20th-century international relations, Sino-US relations, China’s reform and opening-up era, and China’s relations with its neighboring countries.

Since its inception, the Center has upheld three core missions: advancing research, fostering academic cooperation, and improving teaching and learning quality. These missions are deeply intertwined and mutually reinforcing. Today, the Center is evolving into a research-oriented think tank, bringing together the most prominent scholars and research teams in the history of international relations and establishing in-depth cooperations with the world’s most influential research institutions.
